The Actor’s Rostrom
by Paul Froemming

Nancy Kawalek at the Lobero

Some of the best acting you will ever see is performed without sets, costumes, or stage makeup. It is what you could call "The theatre of the mind." Here in Santa Barbara we call it "Speaking of Stories" a monthly series of performances where fine actors read great literature. It isn’t always just one actor reading at a podium. At times they have shared the stage with an entire jazz band and singers. April’s performance featured the distinguished actor Robert Guillame who was joined by four other performers in a dramatic reading. Most of the time, though, the actors do solo performances. In May, Christina Pickles and Rudy Wilirich headlined the evening, reading short stories by Stephen McCauley and Italo Calvino respectively. Santa Barbara author Jean Harfenist, whose first-person collection of stories will soon be published by Knopf, had her story "The Road Out of Acorn Lake" read by Julie Pearl. UCSB Artist-in-Residence Nancy Kawalek and Ventura-based actor Zachary Levi completed the lovely evening. As "Speaking of Stories" ends another season, those of us who are addicted to those Monday nights at 7:30 hope, hope, hope they will be back again next year.
