MARCH 22, 2004  - Press Release

Point and Counterpoint . . .
opposing agendas result in sweet and bittersweet encounters

Monday, March 22nd at 7:30 at the Lobero Theatre Speaking of Stories presents an evening of stories to move, intrigue, amuse and endear. We bring to our stage a host of familiar faces who are at the forefront of the Santa Barbara acting community.

Pearl S. Buck’s The Lovers tells the heartfelt tale of an estranged couple who are brought together to finalize the details of their separation. As they deal with some surprising news from their only daughter, they find that their romance might not be as dead as they thought. John Fink whose career includes works both on and off Broadway, numerous film and television credits as well as appearances at Rubicon Theatre and in Art for Ensemble Theatre, relays the story.

Ensemble Theatre veterans Nancy Nufer and Rudy Willrich lend their considerable comedic talents to The Cliché Expert Takes The Stand.  This lively duo deftly deliver Frank Sullivan’s exposé on the use of language to great comic effect.

Making her fourth appearance with Speaking of Stories is Allison Coutts-Jordan. Drama-Logue and Indie Award winner, Allison has been a member of Ensemble Theatre Company since 1986 and was most recently seen in SBCC’s critically acclaimed production of Wit. It is perhaps fitting then, that she gets to play the ‘flip side of the coin’ as she recounts Amy Hempel’s In The Cemetery Where Al Jolson Is Buried, an account of enduring friendship through the most difficult of times.

Night Vision by Emma Donoghue is a celebratory tale of courage through adversity to warm the heart. It features a young, blind child and her willful struggle to gain acceptance. Accomplished Actress and screenwriter, Faline England most recently seen in Rubicon Theatre’s production of All My Sons, returns to our stage to bring this story to life.

Speaking of Stories plays at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 22nd  at the Lobero Theatre,
33 E. Canon Perdido Street , in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara .
