APRIL 26, 2004 - Press Release

Come celebrate with us, April in Paris . . .
magical stories from the city of light

Monday, April 26 at 7:30 at the Lobero Theatre Speaking of Stories will take you on a French adventure, with an evening of stories in and about this magic city.

Mavis Gallant’s In Transit describes a young French newlyweds encounter with an elderly American couple and how this in turn prompts the exploration of the foibles of human relationships. Accomplished performer of both straight and musical theatre and recipient of four Indie Awards, native Santa Barbaran, Richard Hoag, lends his considerable skill to this story.

Making her debut with Speaking of Stories, Actress, Director and teacher, Meredith McMinn most recently seen at Center Stage in the title role of The House of Bernada Alba relays Lesley Quinn’s amusing At A Loss For Words. In her haste to escape all things French whilst awaiting departure from a Paris airport, a mother loses sight of her better judgment in her frantic scramble to attain ‘English’ reading material. However, ‘all’s well that end’s well.’

David Sedaris adopts his usual comic style describing his frustration with learning how to speak French, and the curious assignation of gender type to nouns. The association of things feminine or masculine is not an obvious one and is expounded to hilarious effect in Make That A Double . UCSB undergraduate, Will McFadden joins our stage to convey Sedaris’ witty anecdote. A Sophomore in the BFA acting program at UCSB, Will was recently seen in Much Ado About Nothing at the Hatlen Theatre.

Renowned French Author, Honré de Balzac’s A Passion in the Desert  tells the amazing adventure of a young French soldier who discovers the most unlikely of companions while stranded in the Egyptian desert. Multi-talented, Jeff Mills, best known for his involvement with the critically acclaimed company Boxtales, brings this tale to life. Jeff’s career has spanned the country and his love of Shakespeare sees him working as both performer and Director with Shakespeare Santa Barbara.

A graduate of SBCC & UCLA’s Theatre, Film and Television program, Eric Davison’s objective is to make storytelling his career, so it is fitting then that he makes his first appearance with Speaking of Stories to deliver Adam Gopnik’s autobiographical The Rules of the Sport; an entertaining account of the contrasts between the American and French attitudes toward ‘the gym culture’.
