GEORGE BACKMAN

 

George was trained at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and has appeared world-wide in over twenty major Shakespeare roles.  He played Guildenstern in the Royal National Theatre production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and has appeared on the New York stage in Harvey, 1776, TratuffeA Scent of Flowers, and El Gesticulador.  He has recorded over 800 books for the Library of Congress' Talking Books program.  In Santa Barbara he has played Gloucester in King Lear, GB Shaw in Dear Liar, Captain Shotover in Heartbreak House, Prospero in The Tempest, Leontes in The Winters Tale, and Mr. Sandor in The Danube. At the Rubicon Theatre he appeared as Mr. van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank, as Mr. Kirby in You Can't Take It With You, and he will play Prospero again in The Tempest for the Rubicon International Theatre Festival in 2009.  He is the recipient of five Independent Theatre Awards.
