NANCY J. FAIRLEY

Fairley earned her bachelor's degree in African studies from the City University of New York, and her Ph.D. in anthropology from the SUNY-Stony Brook. Before joining the Davidson faculty in 1993, she taught at Lake Forest College, University of Cincinnati, Lincoln University, and Lehman College.

She received a Fulbright Fellowship in 1999-2000 to study African Americans who have repatriated in the past decade to the African country of Ghana. Her research there dovetails conveniently with her position since 1996 as resident director for Davidson's semi-annual summer study program in that country.

Since she joined Davidson’s anthropology faculty in 1993, Fairley has also become well-known as a storyteller. What began as a fun activity with her daughter, Malu, and her classmates, has developed professionally. Fairley has conducted many storytelling workshops in schools in and around Davidson, and was keynote speaker at the meeting of the Association for Independent Schools in Africa in Dakar, Senegal. Her penchant for storytelling has expanded into writing and publishing children's stories and doing research on folklore of other cultures.
