JEAN-JOSEPH RABEARIVELO

Jean-Joseph Rabéarivelo (1901–1937)- Born in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, during French colonial rule, Rabéarivelo left school at thirteen, but continued to read the Western classics, mastering both French and Spanish. The 19th-century French Symbolist poets influenced his early poems, and Baudelaire was a strong influence. While alive he published three collections of poetry, La Coupe de cendres (1924), Sylves (1927), Volumes (1928), and two plays, Imaitsoanala, Fille d’oiseau (1935) and Aux portes de la ville (1936). A collection of love poems Vieilles chansons de pays Imerina (1939), appeared after his death, of suicide, in 1937.
