Isabel Allende
Born in Peru, Isabel
Allende was raised in Chile. Before being exiled from Chile after the
assassination of her uncle, President Allende, Isabel also went to work for the
United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization in Santiago, where she was a
secretary for several years. Later, she became a journalist, editor, and advice
columnist for Paula magazine. In addition, she worked as a television
interviewer and on movie newsreels. Her debut novel, The House of Spirits,
became a bestseller in Spain and West Germany and a film in 1994. Of Love
and Shadows received a nomination for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in
1984. Her other works include Portrait in Sepia, Daughter of Fortune, The
Infinite Plan, Eva Luna, the short story collection The Stories of Eva
Luna, the memoir Paula, and Aphrodite: A Memoir of the Senses.
City of the Beast is her first novel for young readers.
