David Niven

Born the youngest of four children in London in 1910, David Niven is most well-known for successful acting career.  His films include Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), Separate Tables (1958) which earned him his one and only Oscar, Bedtime Story(1964), The Pink Panther (1963), Trail of the Pink Panther (1982), and The Curse of the Pink Panther (1983).  After establishing himself as an accomplished actor, Niven proved also to be a talented author, publishing two novels, Once Over Lightly and Go Slowly, Come Back Quickly, and two memoirs, The Moon’s a Balloo, which became and international best-seller, and Bring on the Empty Horses.  Niven was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and died in July 1983.  His obituary in the Times newspaper summed up the kind of man Niven was:  'the memory of an archetypal English gentleman, witty, debonair, immaculate in dress and behaviour, but with mischief lurking never far from the surface.'
