AUGUSTUS HODGES

Augustus M. Hodges, a noted journalist and fiction writer, had a predilection for writing Christmas stories. He is the author of “The Christmas Reunion Down at Martinsville ,” “The Prodigal Daughter: A Story of Three Christmas Eves,” “Three Men and a Woman,” and “Three Christmas Eves.”

Born in Williamsburg , New York in 1854, Hodges was a graduate of the Hampton Normal and Industrial Institute.  Like his illustrious father Willis A. Hodges, a pioneering journalist and abolitionist, Hodges dedicated his life to fighting racism and bigotry. In 1876, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, where he served for one term, and in 1890, he established the prestigious African-American journal the Brooklyn Sentinel. “The Blue and the Gray” was originally printed in the Indianapolis Freeman, which published many of his short stories.
